Newspapers

What are Newspapers?

  • Newspapers provide articles each day about current events and are a good source for local, regional, national or international information.
  • Newspapers, like journals and magazines, are called "periodicals" because they are published regularly, or periodically.
  • You can find newspapers in print or online formats.  Libraries subscribe to both print and online databases that provide access to thousands of newspaper articles online.  The COA Library's Article Databases webpage lists all of the databases they subscribe to and has a category for Newspaper resources. Access to these valuable resources is free for registered COA students.
  • Many newspapers have their own websites with selections from today's news. Sometimes they provide earlier, popular articles for free, but will frequently charge you for full access to all of their articles.
  • Your most reliable and complete access to newspaper articles is provided through article databases purchased by your library, such as Gale Onefile News or Newspaper Source Plus.
