More on Types of Databases

Library Catalog.PNG Library Catalogs are used to find all of the materials a library purchases. Catalogs may include records for books, magazines, journals, newspapers,  etc. The COA Library Catalog does NOT list articles within magazines, journals and newspapers. It will only list whether or not the library subscribes to a periodical (magazines, journals, newspapers) and dates owned for that periodical.

Article Databases are used to find periodical articles on a topic. They include citations for articles and often the full-text of the articles. You can print or email the information. The Library pays to provide their users with access to the various article databases. In order to access the article databases from off-campus, you must type in your Portal login info. Most of the articles within the databases are not available on the free Internet.
