Since the spring of 2020, my teaching has changed a lot. I used to be on campus every day, teaching classes, holding office hours and attending meetings. When the campus closed in March 2020, all of those things went online. I had to learn a whole new set of skills to teach online classes. For awhile, the situation was extremely difficult and confusing for everyone.
Everything has gotten easier since then, but it is very different. I am not connected with the students as I was in the past. Some of them keep their video off during class, so I can't even see them.
Some students like the convenience of online classes, but I worry because our enrollment has gone way down. Now, I am used to working at home and not having to go to campus every day. My commute used to take an hour and a half every day, so I save time now. On the other hand, teaching online actually takes more time because of more time setting up and grading in Canvas.
In spring 2022, we are supposed to go back to campus again, and I am scheduled for classes on campus twice a week. We will have to teach and study in masks. But maybe we have lost students since they don't want to be online, so we need to do this.
