This 100% ONLINE ASYNCHRONOUS 8-WEEK LATE-START COURSE surveys modern European history from c. 1660 to the present. The course examines the development of Europe from just after the Renaissance and Reformation in Europe and into the modern world to the present. Major themes will include the social, cultural, political, and economic factors that contributed to the historical development of modern Europe.

The class will also follow the progression of issues surrounding religion, politics, and art and ideas as they impacted European, and world, cultures and societies and we’ll also discuss issues of race, class, ethnicity, and gender with special attention paid to how and why Europe influenced conceptions of “civilization” and the “west” in modern history and different elements of that legacy. Emphasis is also placed on students developing historical understanding as well as critical thinking and creative thinking skills and practices to become more informed citizens of the world and to gain a deeper understanding of different aspects of European culture, politics, and society.
