Charles Darwin’s book, On the Origin of Species (1859), was the culmination of over two decades of observation, data collection, and thinking. During this time, Darwin met and corresponded with Alfred Russel Wallace. Wallace had independently conceived the theory of evolution by natural selection while traveling the world and asked Darwin for his opinion on his work. Stunningly, both men had come to the same conclusion based on different sets of observation in different parts of the world!
This exercise reviews both pathways to their theories and some of the controversy around the publication in terms of who gets the credit.
