Laboratory Rules

To maintain a safe laboratory environment the following rules are to be followed at all times. Consistent rule negligence will result in point deduction from the total lab points obtained. Failure to follow appropriate laboratory safety, and consequently classmate safety, will result in temporary or permanent dismissal from the class.

1. No food or drinks are allowed in the laboratory.
2. Wear appropriate clothing.
3. Tie back long hair and remove any loose jewelry.
4. Roll up loose sleeves when working with a flame.
5. Wear goggles and gloves when instructed to do so.
6. Do not pour chemicals down the sink unless otherwise instructed.
7. Keep open flames away from any flammable material.
8. Know the location of the lab shower and eye rinse station.
9. Report any mishap small or large to the TA or instructor.
10. Do NOT improperly operate any laboratory equipment.
11. Clean-up your station and wash your hands.
12. In case of an emergency exit towards the stair way.
13. Follow proper procedure according to district policy on vaccination
14. Wear appropriate mask at all times.

Animal use in Biology 1A

Biology 1A at Berkeley City College requires the use of preserved animals in the course of instruction. Such animal use is determined to be appropriate and important for the education of biology majors. Should students find the use and dissection of animal specimens to be contrary to their interests or beliefs, they should discuss with their instructor and / or seek alternative courses / majors.
