Course Overview

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to Math 13, Introductory Statistics. I am very excited to help you on your educational journey in learning math this semester. It was always a struggle for me as a student learning math and I have many stories on why. But learning math can be fun and fulfilling if you give it a chance!

It is from my own learning experiences that I try to base my teaching style to be more helpful in guiding students so that it is not so much a struggle learning math, but more a fun and productive challenge.

This course is designed to introduce the student to the study of statistics and probability. Topics include descriptive statistics (organization of data, histograms, and measures of central tendency and spread), linear correlation and regression, design of experiments, introductory probability, random variables, the normal distribution and Student's t-distribution, and statistical inference, including confidence intervals and tests and significance. Use of a graphing calculator or computer for statistical analysis is required. CAN STAT 2, CSU, UC (credit limits may apply to UC-see counselor).

Math can be challenging, but with regular practice and hard work, everyone can be successful!

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

Interpret measures of central tendency, variation, and position of data sets
Compute and interpret probabilities using normal and t-distributions.
Analyze hypothesis tests.

Instructor Communication and Office Hours

The class is formatted online and face to face communication is limited. So office hours and other face to face communication will mainly be online through zoom (see link below). My campus office is located in D-218.

You can make an appointment or come to my regular office hours labeled below.

Office Hours:

Tuesday from 830a to 930a or 1130a - 1230p
Wednesday from 9a to 11a
Thursday from 830a to 930a

I will also be on zoom during the week doing my own work stuff, so feel free to drop in. I usually am on Monday through Wednesday between 9a and 5p and Fridays between 9a and 2p. If you are unable to visit me during these days and times, let me know and we can possibly schedule another time.

IMPORTANT: There are 3 required "Conference" dates for students to meet with me during the semester. These dates can be in person or on zoom, but they are required in order for me to give points on certain assignments. Each meeting should take between 10 to 30 minutes and basically it is a "check in" with students to make sure you are on track with everything. In order to pass the course, students MUST meet with me for these conferences. Week 1 and Week 2 is reserved for Conference 1 meeting days/times, Week 7 and Week 8 is reserved for Conference 2 days/times, and Week 15 and Week 16 is reserved for Conference 3 days/times. Below are the tabs for the sign up sheets, and also Checklist for topics that will be discussed.

In general, students can drop in during my availability on zoom/in person below, but is is ideal if students let me know a day and time. You can send me a message through CANVAS Inbox to let me know a day and time you want to meet and I will respond with a confirmation. If there is a time conflict, students can let me know and I can try my best to accommodate a time and day that will work for both of us.
