Methods of Evaluating Outcomes

Participation:  Workouts / Discussions/ Possible Fitness Tests  = 75%

Course Content:  Quizzes  = 25%

                                              100 % possible

Each week there will usually be:

  • 2 Yoga Workouts to complete (Filming yourself to Confirm)
  • 1 Discussion to complete regarding the workout/ course content
  • 1 Mini quiz on weekly course content (ie: 2 questions)

These elements of the course will be graded in points. Your points will be totaled to calculate your final grade. Graded assignments that are worth more points, will have more impact on your final grade than lower point totals.

As you progress through the course, you will only see the scores/grade % for your completed and graded assignments up to that point in the class.  Mathematically, all of your scores are added up, and divided up by the total points possible and multiplied by 100 to get the percentage earned in the course.

Example for a week:

Your Points Scored

Total Points Possible

Workout:          4

4

Discussion:       1

2

Quiz:                 2

TOTAL Points:  7

 According to this example:  7/8 = .87 x 100 = 87%  (B grade)

Your points will accumulate to create your final grade in this course.  Remember, missing workouts, discussions, quizzes or assignments will drastically affect your grade!!

Grading Scale

  • 90.0 – 100 % = A
  • 80.0 – 89.9 % = B
  • 70.0 – 79.9 % = C
  • 60.0 – 69.9 % = D
  • <60.0 % = F

Quizzes

Quizzes are due at the end of each week prior to Sunday 11:55pm (you will be locked out after that time)

Failure to complete the quiz by this time will result in a non-grade (zero points) for that quiz. Each Quiz will be generally worth about 2 points; and you will usually have 1 quiz each week (usually just 2 questions of multiple choice and T/F).

Quizzes are based primarily off of reading materials from the online course module pages (readings and videos) for each week’s topics.

Workouts

The workouts for each week will include a variety of yoga poses (Asanas), breathing focus (Prana), and mindfullness.  The workouts will include elements of strength, endurance and flexibility and well as focusing on mental relaxation and body rejuvenation.  Generally, you will complete 2 workouts for each week, one with the course instructor, and one from a selected online fitness professional.  The 2 workouts should be completed on two separate days Monday – Friday if possible, so that you can complete the Friday Discussion due date that include discussing your workouts.

Safety Note:  This class is an exercise class and all participants should be healthy enough to participate in prolonged physical activity with increases in heart rate, blood pressure, and stress to the musculoskeletal structure.  Participants with health issues should consult a physician prior to starting any activity.  Please inform the instructor of any physical injuries or health issues prior to this class to discuss possible modifications or limitations you may have.

Filming Notification

As we are doing an asynchronous class with pre-recorded videos, you will be required to turn in a time-lapse video of you doing the workouts to verify completion.  This means that your images will be loaded in an assignment viewable only by the instructor. You will need to have one device to view the workout video (laptop/ tablet/ phone. etc), and a phone to film time-lapse video (directions provided in assignment).  The time-lapsed video is a compact way to avoid using much memory as a 1 hour filming session becomes a 30 second video).  You will attach the time-lapse video on the participation assignment by the due date. Please include the description of the workout video you are completing in the title.

Discussion Requirements

One of the graded elements for participation in class are “Discussions”.

Each week we will have a discussion topic that will relate to the workouts completed during that week. A Discussion is an online way to 'chat' and answer an initial question that is posted relating to the week’s content. You will be able to see other classmate’s posts as well. You must post Two individual times in each Discussion EVERY WEEK to get the maximum number of points for your participation. Each post in the Discussion must be substantive (significant/abundant) and are worth up to 2 points total (1 points for each of the 2 individual posts) for that Discussion.

Note:  Your first Initial post is Due by Friday of each Week, and the remaining post by Sundays at 11:55pm.  Failing to post your initial response by Friday will cost you 1 of the 2 points for the discussion (1/2 credit if you turn it in on Saturday/Sunday).  This is so that there are posts available so that others in the class have time to read them and respond to each other.

Posts should be at least a paragraph (ie: 50 words); and should discuss your personal experience with the subject and give significant details (like heart rate, effort level, movements that were challenging, etc).

If you post more than 2 posts, you will not gain any additional points. Make sure, if you want to add any additional Non-Graded posts, beyond the 2 required (to enhance discussion) put in parenthesis (DO NOT GRADE)… so I do not grade it and hold you to the grading standards.  (Otherwise I will grade the first 2 posts I happen to read)

What are the 2 Posts (for each Discussion):

  1. The first or INITIAL Post is your individual response to the Discussion topic question. It is Due by Friday prior to 11:55pm of each Week (or you will get ½ credit!)
  2. The second Post is a response to another classmate's initial post. (Due Sundays prior to 11:55pm)

Late and Makeup Work

On time assignments will be given full credit and then graded for completeness.

There are NO late Quizzes or Discussion Posts allowed. If you fail to take a quiz or post your Discussion responses in the time allowed, it will result in a zero grade for that quiz or Discussion.

SICK DAYS - If you have a medical reason during a week and are unable to complete the physical activities for the discussion and the quiz, you may complete a written make-up assignment for that week.  There will be a 2 WEEK maximum allowed for makeup assignments.

Makeup assignment (8 points possible):  read through the weekly module content you missed and type a 1-2 page written assignment summarizing the information covered, including what you learned, any information that was new to you, or if you are familiar with the concepts - how you learned about them and what experiences you have had with those topics.  You will also need to pick one area to do additional research on that topic and add that to the discussion.  Discussion must be thorough regarding the content for that week to prove comprehension and application to earn all points possible.  The Assignment must be submitted through the “Makeup Assignment” section located in the introductory class module.

Canvas/ Online Course Orientation

Before you begin to look at the materials in Week One, please read through the homepage and click on each of the 3 big boxes at the bottom of the page to get orientated to the class (or start with the orientation box and keep clicking “Next” at the bottom to get through all the pages in the introductory module).

There are also links to the left where you can get to various parts of the class… “Modules” will get you to the basic layout of the class.

I have set up the course to have resources that you will click on that will take you to other websites. I usually set these up so that a NEW window will open with that resource/ webpage. When you are done reading the webpage, close that window (click on the "X" in the upper right corner) to get back to the main health class page.

HELPFUL HINT - When you complete each week’s Module, I would recommend collapsing the Canvas Module for that week by clicking on the small arrow to the left of the Module title.  This will allow you to collapse the previous weeks to avoid long scrolling down once you progress through the modules of the course.
