Grading

There are no late penalties for any assignments in this course, but I encourage you to keep up with the material. There is a lot of content in this class, and it will be difficult to catch up if you fall behind. The lowest grade you can get on any assignment is 50%; there will be no zeros on any assignments. If you fail to turn in an assignment on time then Canvas will automatically assign you 50% for that assignment, but that grade can be improved if you complete it later.

Homework Exercises/Quizzes & Discussion Boards (35% of overall grade)

  • Reading with examples: When working in Canvas, you must do each page in order. You cannot skip forward. This encourages you to read the material before jumping into the graded exercises.
  • Did I Get This quizzes: There are many short Did I Get This quizzes embedded in the Canvas modules to help you test your understanding as you work through the material. You can take each Did I Get This quiz three times and revise your answers based on the feedback provided. Your highest score is recorded.
  • Discussion items: Some challenging problems are set up as online discussions. A module contains anywhere from 0-3 discussions. Groups are randomly assigned for each module, so you will usually work with the same small group for one to two weeks. To earn full credit, post your answer on time and provide high-quality written feedback to at least two people in your group before the discussion is set to close. You will find more details about discussions linked to each discussion board item in Canvas.

Checkpoint quizzes (20% of overall grade):

Checkpoint quizzes occur at the end of each module and at the end of a Unit. You have three

attempts on Checkpoints, only the highest score is recorded. Use the feedback to improve your

score.

Midterm Exams (25% of overall grade)

There will be two midterm exams, each worth 7.5% of your grade. These exams will be available on Canvas on the exam dates

Final Exam (20% of overall grade)

There will be a final exam worth 15% of your grade that will be made available on Monday May 18 - 23, 2026.

Attendance

As this is an online course, there are no mandatory meeting times. To complete this course, you must check your Canvas shell regularly, interact with your peers and complete projects and homework assignments. If you are having difficulty completing an assignment, please ask your peers and/or contact me via the canvas shell to resolve the issue.

Accommodations: Students with disabilities are encouraged to meet with me in private to discuss their services and accommodations. Please bring your “Services and Accommodations” form from the Student Accessibility Services to our meeting. This information will be kept confidential and will not affect your grade. Also, students who think they could use support from the Student Accessibility Services for temporary or permanent conditions, or if you suspect you might have a learning disability, please contact their office: (510) 981-2812 or email sas.bcc@peralta.edu to make an appointment.

Students have the right to request reasonable modifications to college requirements, services, facilities or programs if their documented disability imposes an educational limitation or impedes access to such requirements, services, facilities or programs. A student with a disability who requests a modification, accommodation, or adjustment is responsible for identifying himself/herself to the instructor and, if desired, to the SAS office. Students who consult or request assistance from SAS regarding specific modifications, accommodations, adjustments or use of auxiliary aids will be required to meet timelines and procedural requirements established by the SAS office.

Learning Center: Berkely City College Learning Center hours of operation for the Spring 2026 Semester are as follows: Monday – Thursday 10 am – 8 pm (via Zoom & In Person on Campus), Friday 10 am – 3 pm (on Zoom only).

The Learning Center encourages students to utilize the” Schedule an Appointment” features on the Berkely College Learning Center web page to book an appointment with a tutor successfully. Although they welcome drop-ins, they cannot guarantee the availability of tutors because set appointments will always have precedence.

Student Honesty Policy: Berkely City College takes cheating very seriously. Please make sure any work produced is your own. It is also your responsibility to ensure other students are not copying from you (e.g., two identically incorrect test answers will be considered both students’ responsibility). At the very least, a student engaging in academic dishonesty will receive a 0 on that exam or assignment. Consequently, your grade will severely be reduced. In some instances, a student may be asked to leave the course. The incident will be reported to the Dean and the Vice President of Instruction and you may face disciplinary action from the college.

If you are having trouble in the course come talk to me or a counselor. I am more than happy to give any advice or help you with any concepts giving you trouble, tips for studying, etc. Cheating is never worth risking your education!

Class Behavior: This class should be a space where everyone feels comfortable and safe. Whether directed at the instructor or another student, rude or abusive language or behavior will not be tolerated. Failure to follow these rules or the Peralta Community College District Student Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action.
