Course Details & Policies

Computer Access: You must have regular access to the web outside of class.

Textbook: Introductory Statistics by Barbara Illowsky et al. This text is freely available online at OpenStax Introductory Statistics 2e.

Note: There is not sufficient time in lectures for treatment of all topics plus examples. You will need to read the text. The lecture notes do not replace the text. The textbook contains additional discussion and examples.

Calculators & Notes Policy: A scientific or graphing calculator (such as a TI-83 or TI-84) is required for class activities and exams. Smart devices, cell phones, and AI tools are strictly prohibited during exams. You are allowed one 8.5 × 11-inch sheet of handwritten notes (front and back) for each exam.

Computer Use: Outside of class, you are responsible for:

  • Checking your Berkeley City College email daily.
  • Monitoring announcements and MyOpenMath assignments on Canvas.

Grading & Assessment Structure

All assignments and exams will be cumulative. Each assignment problem or question is graded on a 0–3 scale:

  • 3: Perfect (no mistake)
  • 2: Minor mistake(s)
  • 1: Major mistake(s)
  • 0: Unattempted or completely incorrect

While it may seem that a score of 2 out of 3 (67%) is a D, this is actually a solid score under this scale. Final course letter grades will be adjusted/curved accordingly at the end of the term.

Grade Weights:

  • Homework (20%): Completed online via MyOpenMath embedded in Canvas.
  • Daily Group Quizzes (20%): Administered during the last portion of class. A correct quiz must have clear supporting steps as well as the correct final answer. Your lowest 5 quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the term.
  • Two Midterm Exams (30% total / 15% each): Covers all material presented up to the exam day.
    • Midterm 1: Wednesday, September 23
    • Midterm 2: Monday, October 26
  • Final Exam (30%): Monday, December 14. The final exam is comprehensive. Note: There are no makeups for the final exam.

Grade Replacement Rule: Your percentage score on the final exam will replace your lowest midterm exam score if it improves your overall grade (making the final exam worth 45% of your grade a posteriori).

Late Work Policy: NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS OR MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Topics Covered
